This One Just Became a Leadership Conversation

This is Spartan One-One-Seven broadcasting on an unknown communications array.

[ A few members of the team have seen the Master Chief around, but he hasn't made major contact before now. For most of the group, it's the first time they've seen this scarred face. And for one of them, it's far from the first. ]

I understand that this is a different world than the one I come from, and we have no way to return until we accomplish an... objective.

[ An objective that they all have only vaguely heard about from a weird hallucination. He doesn't have to say that part. They already know. ]

This being the case, I'm offering my skills.

I have significant experience leading teams on a variety of ops. I can work longterm on terrain like this. You can count on me in a fight.

But first of all, I do need to know who's in charge of this outfit.

[ Bless his entire heart. ]

I'd actually have to agree on this? No offense to you or your brother, Tim, but experience in law-enforcement can mean a lot of things, not all of them good.

[Thank goodness there's someone here Dan agrees with.]

In fact, in a lot of cases, it's a real demerit.

If we’re taking everyone’s experience on faith, then we’re taking everyone’s experience on faith.

Not every soldier commits war crimes, not every alien is an invader, and not every cop is a bad cop. Dick got fired for trying to expose how corrupt the Blüdhaven PD was.

Fair enough.

I didn't mean to sound judgemental. My experience with law enforcement has been a somewhat mixed bag. Even Starfleet isn't perfect.

Nothing’s perfect. And this theoretical council wouldn’t have to be perfect, but listen to this discussion. We can’t all be rowing in different directions. It takes a crew to steer a ship, right?

But enough of them are. More than enough. As you well know, Tim.

[Dick's been avoiding speaking up because...well, in his own way, he'd been kinda hoping to slide under the radar. But being one of the most trusted heroes in their world does come with a few expectations.]

[Apparently.]

To be honest, I'm not certain that we need a council so much as...a wagon captain. Or maybe a ring master. Somebody who can get everybody headed in the right direction.

Yeah, but I know you, and you have two people who’d vouch for you. That might be more than anyone else here, outside of the people who mention “the Rig”.

Someone needs to send in the clowns, and if it’s a ringmaster we need…

[ Tim just raises an eyebrow and the mirror and mouths “come on.” ]

But there ARE plenty of people from "the Rig" who know and trust each other. We're just some new interlopers.

[Tim mouths "come on" and Dick's eyes narrow.]

I was trapeze, Tim. Not a ringmaster.

Circus experience is still circus experience. It might get you more respect.

Like some of the others pointed out, we need to keep an eye on the stats of any representational group. Just because there’s a large subunit that know each other doesn’t mean they outweigh the interlopers.
