This One Just Became a Leadership Conversation

This is Spartan One-One-Seven broadcasting on an unknown communications array.

[ A few members of the team have seen the Master Chief around, but he hasn't made major contact before now. For most of the group, it's the first time they've seen this scarred face. And for one of them, it's far from the first. ]

I understand that this is a different world than the one I come from, and we have no way to return until we accomplish an... objective.

[ An objective that they all have only vaguely heard about from a weird hallucination. He doesn't have to say that part. They already know. ]

This being the case, I'm offering my skills.

I have significant experience leading teams on a variety of ops. I can work longterm on terrain like this. You can count on me in a fight.

But first of all, I do need to know who's in charge of this outfit.

I definitely will for the future. I’d promise not to tell anyone, but I can’t control who sees this.

[ But now that’s she’s mentioned it. ]

Maybe we need to come up with a joint list of concerns and needs, too. I’ve been assuming that food whatever that may mean - shelter and freedom slash the way home is at the top of everyone’s priorities, but that might be the case.

Some things are inevitably going to come out whether I like it or not.

[ And she doesn't. At all. But she's sort of giving up with some of it. ]

I'd say those would be most people's top priorities, but how people want to go about achieving those let alone any other issues we come across is going to be very varied.

In my experience, humans have far less regard for the environment and non-sapient life compared to my people, for example. I'm sure that won't be the only thing.

[ She's very biased against humans, if that wasn't already obvious. ]

Most people are “pro” whatever they’re always done or known, and they put their kind First.

[ The humans will want things the human way, the werewolves will want things their way. Holly will want things done as she sees appropriate. ]

I don’t think the technology is available for mass ecological damage, and with that voice going on about saving the Green, I hope everyone would be smart enough not to try.

[ Holly deadpans. ]

If I felt I could hope that, ever, I'd have less to worry about at home.

[ Granted, he's right, it would be hard, but even watching people hunt makes her squirm, as much as she begrudgingly admits it's necessary. She sighs, rubs her face. ]

There's only a few humans I trust not to screw me over, and even they manage to surprise me sometimes. No offence [ some offence ] to any of you, but none of you make that list right now.

[ Tim actually laughs. It’s only a little sarcastic. ]

You ever wish you could wish on a star, and the only thing you’d ask for is for people to stop doing so many stupid things?

[ Yeah, him too. ]

No offence taken. This kind of blind trust is hard.

[ He trusts all of you as far as he can throw you. ]

I'd have a lot more days off if I could make a wish like that.

[ She works with a genuine genius and he still makes the dumbest Frond-damned choices sometimes. ]

Best you can all hope for is I don't distrust you enough to leave your arse behind or bleeding somewhere. No one's there yet.

[ It's half-joking, because honestly no one probably ever will be, she puts too much stock in the value of all life to actually abandon anyone or let them stay hurt if she can heal them. It'd take a lot to make her actually hate someone like, personally. ]

[ You and him both, Ms. Holly. You and him both.

Although Tim sometimes plays the role of a teenaged genius who makes the dumbest smart decisions because he has confidence and resources.

But he’s less than impressed with the joke. That’s not something to make light of. ]

I won’t leave anyone behind. You can do as you see fit, but I don’t think it’s right to screw over anyone in this group. We’re all victims.

[ Holly shakes her head. He's right, of course. She kind of hates that she knows she'll put her life on the line for these people even though she doesn't trust them as far as her tiny arms can throw them, but she'd be no better than some of the people she really hates if she didn't. ]

Good job I've never actually left anyone behind, then.

[ She's best friends with the kid who kidnapped her and held her for ransom, she's remarkably lenient with her tolerance, really. ]
