wildestlands | [TEXT] Wishing Well

[Henry is not the one with the most social skills out there, definitely not, but he can still make himself useful and he won't hesitate, especially when he knows that Eileen is in danger. He might not be able to help her from here, but if he contributes to whatever this new mission is he will be able to go home sooner, or at least he wouldn't waste time.

So there he is, walking through the woods and using his great sense of direction to make a map - sure came in handy in Silent Hill. Now that he promised Tommy he would make him one, he has to, so he might as well get to it immediately. After he's done with his touring of a medium-large area - he won't go too deep in the woods or caves without finishing the map first or without backup, he's dumb but not that dumb - he copies it onto the mirror with his crayon, broadcasting it for everyone.]

Hi everyone, I'm Henry. I'm making a map of the area, here is what I have so far. Let me know if you can see it.

[The map has a clear indication of where the common area is, but now there is an arrow being added next to a circular shape.]

I am here. I found what seems to be a wishing well? It says that if you toss a coin it will make your wishes come true through magic. I don't want to try it, but if you do just follow the directions, you will get here in no time.

[The mirror makes it clear he's already made the tree line, please hurry.]

If it's a monster, I'm gonna kill it so good and so hard!!!

[Gary is clearly sprinting and having a hard time of it by his breathing rate as he shrieks into the mirror -] He's already in the trees someone get him!!!

[Elle sees that Cato is going for the well and-- no. Absolutely not.

She shifts to feline and bolts, following his scent until she can intercept him. She then full body tackles him (making sure to not actually injure the cub) and proceeds to just... lay on top of him. Now he can't move, and Elle is looking at him very judgmentally.]

Dude!

Elle! Get off me!

[He struggles but she is huge and heavy and he may be strong but he's not strong enough to get something that large off himself.]

It's not like I was going without my swords. I kill stuff like this all the time!

[Normally he'd be biting by now but he likes Elle too much to do it]

[Gary races up, huffing and puffing, leaning on his knees to get his breath, failing to get it immediately and having to lean over one more time.]

Whoo!

I am! So glad you made friends with smart girls.

[He'll thank Elle more directly in a minute, but for now he's still in Dad Panic mode.]

Little Cato, what if whatever's down there wished to be unkillable?

[Elle proceeds to chastise him by play-nipping a couple of times, then she begins to clean his fur. If he's going to act like an impulsive child, she will treat him like one. Also she wants to give Gary time to catch up.

God, she hopes she wasn't this bad when she was a cub.

(She was totally this bad. She was so impatient about being able to gain rank that she made Isaac help her cheat.)]

Ew, Elle!

[But there is nothing he can do.]

[Also, as gross as it is it's weirdly relaxing and he has no idea why.]

[He's just about to do a full tilt "daaaaad" at his dad but at being asked about it making itself unkillable, he opens his mouth. Closes it.]

...I didn't think of that.

[But he really wants to stab something, those Nightrender monsters were unkillable and he hasn't had a satisfying fight in ages.]

How do we even know it can grant itself its own wishes? That makes no sense!

We don't know anything about the magic well that grants wishes! ANY-THING! That means it could be anything! Including something that can wish itself immortal. Do I have to lay down a ground rule about not jumping into magic wells until you know whether what's at the bottom is killable or not?

[Cato's fur is matted and messy. Has no one groomed him before? This is a horrifying prospect to Elle. Clearly this means she needs to keep doing it, more intensely.

She also gives him a look and snorts as if to say see?

Once it looks like he won't take off, and after a minute of forcing him to suffer the indignity of cleaning, she shifts back to Homid. She is still sitting on top of him in a way that makes it difficult for him to get out, though.]

Your Dad is right, it is very silly to go running headfirst into a situation you know nothing about.

[She is absolutely going to use this opportunity teach him the correct way to poke at unknown magical objects.]

Ugh! I haven't had a chance to kick anything's butt practically since we got here! [The Sisters had resoundingly been kicking his.] And before that it was zombie Garys so it wasn't any fun!

[He's not had some actual fun butt-kicking in ages because everything in Final Space had been so dire and scary and sad and the main minions they'd had to kill were zombified alternate versions of his own father. Not a fun time.]

Her, I get, because she just met me and doesn't know what I can do. [He gestures wildly at his dad.] But you know I can fight; you're being so uncool right now!

[Gary clutches his chest. He exhales hard, as the u-word cuts him deeper than he's ever known.]

I'm -

[He sounds physically pained. Because he is.]

I'm looking out for your best interests!

[He rallies mightily.]

We don't know how a lot of things work here, and we've got to be cautious about the fights we pick when we don't have a lot of answers. That's just how it is, Little Cato. I didn't ask it to be this way.

[Elle gets up and off Cato and holds out a hand to help him stand up.]

Cato-- this isn't about skill. It's about strategy.

[Elle is making a face that says 'I know you're better than this, so why are you acting this way?'

She learned that one from her mother.]

If someone with a lot of experience dived head first into doing this, I'd call them an idiot too.

[She gestures to Dan and Bunny fighting behind them.

When you're dealing with the unknown, your best option is usually reconnaissance, not diving headfirst into a situation you haven't properly assessed.

[Elle is going to mentor the shit out of this cub.]

[Little Cato swats her hand away - not painfully, just pettily, and stays there on the ground, arms crossed, shoulders bunched near his head.]

Reconnaissance is lame!

[He's done it before, actually, which is something Gary knows.]

[Then he turns to his dad, because he's lashing out, because he has a lot of big feelings all of a sudden, and he raises a hand and points at Gary.]

Lame!

[Then he crosses his arms again and lets out a low growl, just a little ongoing rumble like a pissy cat, a noise he doesn't actually usually make much.]

[Oh it hurts! It hurts so deeply! Who would have thought words could hurt so much? Gary stumbles slightly, clutching at his chest.]

Hnng! Little Cato - name calling doesn't make it any less true, little buddy.

[Elle sits down on the ground next to Cato. She doesn't crowd him or get into his space, but she's still very much there. She glances at Gary, trying to figure out how best to approach this. He seems to use humor as a way to defuse situations-- Elle was going to follow his lead.]

Plus, if you had fallen into the well and there was no monster, the walls could've been too slippery and mossy to be able to climb. You could've gotten stuck until we found a way to help you out.

And that would've been really boring.

[She smiles to show she's not mad.]
