001: GROUP INTRODUCTIONS
Okay, so everything's settled down a bit and people have stopped trickling in. Great. What a situation we're in, right? We can't even wander too far away or we're teleported right back to the group.
[She's definitely going to be testing those boundaries later.]
Anyhow, I'm willing to accept that this probably isn't a Rig mission now. Wherever we are, it's not the same world. The level of technology isn't too high either, but we know someone out there has a radio transmitter or else the big yellow guy wouldn't keep playing songs at us.
So, since we're stuck together for the foreseeable future, it's probably time we settle in and get to know one another. Names, skillsets, dreams, etc. You know, important things. Don't hold back, we're probably going to need to know each other pretty well if we're going to survive here.

Did he ever mention Chief O'Brien or Commander Worf?

He wasn't on the Rig long before the Stuff ejected him - that's a long story even in the short version - an' by the time I was outta medical he was gone. I really hope he got home okay.
Based on him, though, Starfleet's good people. Professional, know your stuff, decent ethics, 'specially for a military org. Glad to have you on board, though I could wish the circumstances were different. I'm Ssaturday, if you didn't catch it.

Nice to meet you, though.

[Nog was giving her the benefit of the doubt. She didn't know what a Ferengi was so the odds of her asking something offensive was fairly low. Those who did might have taken blanket permission an excuse to be terrible.
He'd been lucky that most of the people he knew, even if they didn't like Ferengi, were willing to re‐examine their assumptions when it came to him.]

So like - are you metahuman, like me? From Earth an' all but like, different, uh, what's the word. Speciation?
Or are you from an actual other planet, not an Earth? I'm askin' cause if you are, you're only the second person not from an Earth that I've ever met.
You don't wanna talk about it, that's cool too. It's just that for all the other weird shit my metaplane's got, we don't actually have like, people of any kind who aren't from Earth or connected to it. So I'm kinda curious.

...it's kind of refreshing to meet someone who has no idea what a Ferengi is, honestly.

Sorry t'be a hick an' all, but that's so cool. What's your planet like? Did you grow up there or like, on a spaceship or something?
Ferengi, huh. What, are you guys famous or something?

And you could say that. Infamous is probably more accurate. Our culture is pretty heavily focused on profit as the only measure of personal worth and you're generally expected to do whatever you can to earn one. Even if it means cheating other people out of theirs. Especially if it means cheating other people out of theirs.
I've never had the lobes for it, at least by Ferengi standards, so when I saw a way out I took it.

It's good that you had a way out. Hard thing to do, walking away.

It also helps that my dad's been pushing through reforms ever since he sort of unintentionally became Grand Nagus.
no subject
...Is that the kind of job you usually get unintentionally?
no subject
Technically, he got it through nepotism. My grandmother is in a relationship with Zek, the previous Nagus. But it wasn't something he was angling for and I'm not sure he realized it was even a remote possibility.
no subject
Okay, that sounds like a story.

The short version? To understand any of what happened you have to understand that my grandmother is a financial genius. And legally she wasn't actually allowed to use any of that genius.
The other thing you need to understand is that for the past couple years Zek's been going a bit senile. My grandmother ran into him at one point and picked up on it. So she started a relationship with him, helped prevent anyone else from noticing, and used her financial skills to cover for his waning ones. In exchange he started pushing for giving female Ferengi more rights.

All he really needed was to be in a position where he could do that.

Good on 'im, then.
