I'm certainly not from Earth, but this is a very human-forwards assemblage, if I don't miss my guess.

There was a variant of Earth where humans invented a technology to strip the information from matter and reprogram it haphazardly by exposure to thought-forms. This was a complete and total disaster that rendered much of the planet altered at best and uninhabitable at worst. A company rose to prominence and found ways to profit, and one of those was enslaving people who abruptly appeared within their zone of control.
